How to use this table
- figures have been rounded, and are based on 2024 data
- brackets shows marginal rates for highest and lowest brackets
- colour key
- income tax is orange if brackets start higher than 5% or end higher than 10%
- corporate income tax is orange if brackets start higher than 7.5% or end higher than 9%)
- states sales over 6% (local taxes also apply though)
- salary 65K+
- what to look at if you’re considering sole proprietorship etc.
- not considering fees because differences are minimal and formation fees are one-off
- not considering social security & medicare costs, which are a fixed % for all states.
- but note the total cost to hire an employee will be therefore be proportionally higher in states where the average salary is higher
- what cost to employ includes (and how you want to combine these figures in the last two columns for the overall cost of an employee)
- There's a rule of thumb that the cost is typically 1.25 to 1.4 times the salary, depending on certain variables.
